Learning Modules (2023)
Jan-2023
Lattice Boltzmann Method: let’s suit up! Part I
Speaker: Alessandro De Rosis (University of Manchester)
Date & time: 17th Jan (Hybrid event at Engineering Building A: 2A.032 + Zoom)

Note: This is a hands-on session. Please bring your laptop.
Learning objectives
- Describe the link between macroscopic and microscopic scales.
- Illustrate the motivation behind the origin of the lattice Boltzmann method
- Outline its algorithmic procedure.
- Implement your first LBM code with periodic boundaries.
- Implement your (second) LBM code with no-slip walls.
- Evaluate accuracy, convergence and stability
- Identify and quantify the sources of errors.
Course materials: All you need to bring is your laptop equipped with
- A C++ compiler to run the programs;
- Gnuplot or Excel to plot graphs;
- Paraview (https://www.paraview.org/download/) to visualise contour maps.
