Lattice Boltzmann Method: let’s suit up! Part I

Speaker: Alessandro De Rosis (University of Manchester)

Date & time: 17th Jan (Hybrid event at Engineering Building A: 2A.032 + Zoom)

Note: This is a hands-on session. Please bring your laptop.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the link between macroscopic and microscopic scales.
  • Illustrate the motivation behind the origin of the lattice Boltzmann method
  • Outline its algorithmic procedure.
  • Implement your first LBM code with periodic boundaries.
  • Implement your (second) LBM code with no-slip walls.
  • Evaluate accuracy, convergence and stability
  • Identify and quantify the sources of errors.

Course materials: All you need to bring is your laptop equipped with

  • A C++ compiler to run the programs;
  • Gnuplot or Excel to plot graphs;
  • Paraview (https://www.paraview.org/download/) to visualise contour maps.
